What Is Troubleshooting?
Electrical troubleshooting involves checking for issues in an electrical system and repairing them.
Common electrical problems include:
Flickering lights
Can be a sign of loose wiring, circuit overloads, or improper bulbs. Flickering lights can lead to overheating or sparking in the walls.
No Power to Several Rooms
Often due to a tripped breaker, GFCI reset, or a loose connection upstream-especially in daisy-chained circuits.
No Power to Outlets
Could stem from:
Faulty or old outlets (loose wiring or worn contacts)
A tripped GFCI, which may cut power downstream
Loose/ stab-back connections inside the outlet or upstream
Buzzing
Loose prongs, outlets, or fraying wire can cause the current to jump, which produces a buzzing sound.
Intermittent power loss
A tripped breaker is a common cause of power issues. Inspect the breaker and surrounding wiring to identify potential faults.
At-Home Troubleshooting Checklist
Fully Reset breakers (flip OFF then ON) -weak trips don’t always click
Locate & reset all GFCI outlets-especially in kitchens, bathrooms, garage, basement
